Vivian Campbell – A Musical Journey

Information about Vivian Campbell’s early life and education remains undisclosed, except for the fact that he commenced playing the guitar at the age of 12.

He embarked on his professional music voyage in 1977 by joining the NWOBHM band Sweet Savage. The band’s track “Killing Time” was later covered by Metallica, catapulting them to greater heights. Their debut EP, featuring the single “Take No Prisoners”, marked a significant increase in Campbell’s net worth.

Soon after parting ways with Sweet Savage, Campbell joined Dio in 1983. Their album “Holy Diver” achieved remarkable success and their next release, “The Last In Line” in 1984 reached No.23 in the US. The band continued to thrive throughout the 1980s by releasing albums such as “Sacred Heart” (1985) and “Intermission” (1986), contributing significantly to his net worth.

In 1987, Campbell transitioned to becoming the guitarist for Whitesnake, replacing John Sykes for the single remix “Give Me All Your Love” (1988), before being dismissed. Undeterred, he further pursued his musical aspirations, working on Lou Gramm’s album “Long Hard Look” (1989) and later joining the band Riverdogs. Their debut self-titled album was released in 1990 and “World Gone Mad” was released in 2011. During 1991, he briefly worked with Gramm in his band Shadow King before ultimately joining Def Leppard.

He became a part of Def Leppard in 1992, subsequent to the release of their album “Adrenalize”, where he stepped in to replace Steve Clark. The band released subsequent studio albums such as “Retro Active” (1993), “Slang” (1996), and “Euphoria” (1999), all achieving gold status. Their album “X” released in 2002 peaked at No. 11 on The Billboard 200, and in 2008 they released “Songs From The Sparkle Lounge”. Most recently, their self-titled album in 2015 reached No. 10 on The Billboard 200, significantly boosting Campbell’s net worth.

Apart from his notable band affiliations, Campbell has also established himself as a solo artist. In 2005, he released his studio album “Two Sides Of If”, adding to his wealth.

1To me, guitar playing is not just a technical thing. Jeff Beck is the most creative guitar player, I think. What impresses me is not so much how he plays something, but where do it come from? How does he think of it? He seems to be able to pull these ideas from nowhere. He doesn’t seem to think the same as most guitar players.
2In Leppard, we use a lot of stereo delay. Our tempos are the same every night – Rick Allen is a stickler for tempos, so if a song is 105 BPM we know it will be every night. The sound is very produced, not what you’d call organic, and we do a good job of recreating it live. To ensure that happens, we’re very specific with our delays.
3[on “Black Rose” by Thin Lizzy] I was a huge Lizzy fan, but I became a massive Gary Moore fan as a result of this. He was a phenomenal influence on me. I heard Gary first in Colosseum II, when he was doing jazz fusion. I was trying to learn his licks but didn’t have enough comprehension of music to understand what he was doing.
